SYNTHETIC NICOTINE: Is this the future for the e-cigarette?

A company called " Next Generation Labs Seems to have perfected a new "synthetic nicotine". With the new regulations from the FDA, we might as well say that the subject is already creating a buzz in the vaping industry.

With the recent announcement of new FDA regulations on May 5, 2016, electronic cigarettes and vape devices will soon be classified as " tobacco products ". While several groups are fighting the FDA's e-cigarette regulations directly in court (see our article), synthetic nicotine may well be a secret weapon that keeps the vape industry afloat, less temporarily.

Next Generation Labs isn't the first company to go into manufacturing an artificial form of nicotine, but it appears to be the first to specifically target the vape industry. According to the owner Ron Tully, synthetic nicotine does not have this particular aroma due to the natural tobacco plant which also obliges manufacturers to mask this aftertaste with other products.

In theory, e-liquid producers who switch to synthetic nicotine could save money by reducing their flavor levels. Obviously, the challenge will not be so simple since several obstacles can stand in their way.

First, there is no guarantee that the FDA will not try to update its regulations to accommodate synthetic nicotine in the future. The second obstacle is the cost. According to Edward Uy, the vice president of SQN, an e-liquid manufacturer that already uses synthetic nicotine in its products, it currently costs around 13 times more expensive than the natural version.

Even with its high cost, SQN has launched three different flavors using artificial nicotine and the result is clear, their customers immediately noticed a positive difference in taste. Following the very positive feedback from consumers, the company decided to make a transition and make all their e-liquids based on synthetic nicotine.

THE VAPE INDUSTRY MUST NOT PLACE ALL OF ITS HOPES IN SYNTHETIC NICOTINE.tfn-nicotine-3

But despite all this good news, the vaping industry should be careful not to place all of its hopes and dreams on synthetic nicotine. While synthetic nicotine could become the next new trend, FDA regulations still need to be fought in order to protect the vape industry. But until that happens Next Generation Labs seems well placed to rationalize the production of its synthetic nicotine.
