SWITZERLAND: Tobacco industry and regulations, a real challenge for the country!

As we know, Switzerland is one of the most liberal countries vis-à-vis the tobacco industry and for good reason that it houses the giant Philip Morris on its soil. However, the parliament is considering a broad reform, under the pressure of a popular initiative.

TOBACCO REGULATIONS THAT ARE DIFFICULT TO IMPOSE!

It is not easy to impose tobacco regulations in a country which hosts the headquarters of certain giants of Big Tobacco. Yet this Monday, a debate was taking place on a subject that has despaired prevention circles for years: the reform of the law on tobacco products.

The goal ? Restrict the possibilities offered to tobacco companies to advertise in the country. A first bill had failed in 2016, however the situation could have changed: the popular initiative " Yes to the protection of children and young people against advertising for the tabac ”was filed last year, the controversy of the abortive sponsorship of a Swiss exhibition pavilion in Dubai by Philip Morris exploded in 2019 and the Federal Council wants to move forward with the WHO framework convention on tobacco, signed in 2004 but never ratified - unlike more than 180 countries.

« I am personally not in favor of banning tobacco advertising », However Philippe Nantermod (PLR / VS), which sits on the commission of the National Council dealing with public health (CSSS). "Ban what is aimed directly at minors, okay. But what could "perhaps" affect minors, no.».

This is one of the hot spots of Monday's debate. While certain reforms such as the ban on the sale of cigarettes to under 18s - still possible in 15 cantons - should be imposed, the marketing limits to be set for tobacco companies are hotly contested. Only two advertising areas are currently prohibited to them: radio and television.
