ADDICTIONS: Less tobacco, more vaping and social media!

The year 2021 begins and it is an opportunity for some to take stock of the addiction of young people. European Monitoring Center for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA) shows that if smoking is on the decline in the table of addictions among young people, this is not the case for vaping, video games or even social networks.

LESS TOBACCO, MORE VAPING, GOOD NEWS?

Good or bad news ? Everyone will have their own opinion on the subject. For more than twenty years, the European Monitoring Center for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA) has periodically carried out a major survey on young people's addictions, and around 100.000 of them have been questioned in this context.

The latest results show first of all that smoking has been steadily decreasing since the 90s. We also note that in 1995, 90% of teenagers declared having already consumed alcoholic beverages, and that today they are 80%. Regarding cannabis, its use has tended to stabilize over the past decade. But other risky behaviors have emerged, underlines the medical journal Le Généraliste.

This is the case with the use of vaping, since at 16 years old, 4 in 10 young people (especially boys) indicate having already vaped. We learn that 90% of respondents indicate having used social networks during the past week: 2 to 3 hours on average on school days, and up to more than 6 hours on other days.
