AUSTRALIA: Survey reveals "worrying" adoption of vaping among young people.

In Australia, thehe survey on the national anti-drug strategy among households recently noted a significant drop in smoking but also a “worrying” adoption of vaping, particularly among young people. For the teacher Nick zwar, there is still some way to go to reach the national target.

FALLING TOBACCO BETWEEN 2016 AND 2019

The results of the investigation, published on Thursday July 16 by Australian Institute for Health and Welfare (AIHW), involved a sample of 22 people aged 271 and over from across Australia to assess drug use, attitudes and behaviors.

It has been found that fewer Australians smoke daily. The number of smokers is Present in several = 11% in 2019, against Present in several = 12,2% in 2016. This equates to a reduction of around 100 people who smoke daily.

"E-cigarettes may well play a useful role in helping people quit smoking"  - Nick zwar

Professor Nick zwar, chair of the expert advisory group for the RACGP clinical practice guidelines on smoking cessation, said that while he is pleased to see a drop in smoking, there is still some way to go.

» Australia had a target of achieving less than 10% daily smokers by 2018, and we still have not reached that target. But we're closer to that goal now than we used to be " , did he declare.

« That said, there are still fairly high rates of smoking among those with mental health problems, [and] still high rates of smoking among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. It's gone down again, which is great, but it's still a lot higher than the community in general.  »

AN INCREASE IN VAPE BETWEEN 2016 AND 2019!

Concerns have mainly been raised about the adoption of the vape among smokers which has gone from Present in several = 4,4% in 2016 to Present in several = 9,7% in 2019. This increasing trend was also noted among non-smokers, Present in several = 0,6% à 1,4%.

The increase is particularly noticeable among young adults, with nearly two in three people currently smoking and one in five non-smokers between the ages of 18 and 24 reporting having tried e-cigarettes.

Prof Zwar said that while the increase is comparatively smaller than in other countries like the United States, it remains a concern. " This increase is not a surprise ", did he declare.

« Interestingly, there is reasonable dual use by people who smoke and also use e-cigarettes, and you can look at this in a number of ways; you can say that maybe they smoke less because they vape, or… they do both. E-cigarettes may well play a useful role in helping people quit smoking. But if it is a consumer product, there will be a lot of uses that are not related to stopping or reducing smoking, and there will be, and still are, in young people who would not otherwise have been exposed to nicotine.  »

« Although some people strongly dispute this, there may also be a risk that people who experiment with e-cigarettes will continue to experience smoking.»

A 12-month ban on the importation of all nicotine-containing vape products announced by the federal government in June has since been postponed until 2021. Under this ban, people using cigarettes electronic devices as a means of quitting smoking would only have access to a prescription from their general practitioner.

The survey found that support for measures related to the use of e-cigarettes has increased, with two-thirds of the population supporting restrictions on where it can be used (67%) and in spaces. public (69%).
