AUSTRALIA: Towards a ban on vaping outside monuments

While vaping is already heavily regulated in Australia, new restrictions could arise very soon. Indeed, in Melbourne, it will soon be forbidden to smoke or vape in the exterior surroundings of monuments, transport hubs and emblematic sites.

THE END OF VAPE NEAR PUBLIC PLACES

Smoking or vaping outside of landmarks, transport hubs and iconic landmarks in Melbourne (Australia) should be prohibited according to a city ordinance to expand existing smoke-free zones in the city. The city council is studying the device and signage that will incorporate signs prohibiting smoking or vaping in the busiest places in the Central Business District.

The smoking ban is currently in effect at 13 sites, but could be extended to high-traffic areas such as City Hall, libraries and community sports centers. According to the city's mayor, the demand for more tobacco-free places is coming from the citizens of the city. Current signage regarding smoking bans in the city will soon be updated to also include the ban on vaping in response to the concerning rise in e-cigarette use among young people.

A number of Australian states and territories have passed regulations banning smoking in various outdoor locations, including outdoor dining venues, children's play areas and beaches. In the absence of State initiatives, many local authorities in the country have implemented such restrictions and bans by municipal decrees. Except in Western Australia, the vaping ban is enforced in all places where the smoking ban applies.
