BELGIUM: "The electronic cigarette is a plan B which is perhaps not useless"

In Belgium, the electronic cigarette still does not seem to be a serious avenue considered to put an end to smoking. Legislation, increase in the price of tobacco, nicotine substitutes, in a recent interview, Martial Bodo, tobacco specialist at the Jules Bordet Institute gives a clear opinion on smoking and the use of vaping.

VAPE, JUST A PLAN B?

In Belgium, in the program of the government of Alexander De Croo figured the project to increase for three years the excise duties on the packet of cigarettes. From January 1, 2021, the pack of 20 cigarettes will cost 7,50 euros instead of 6,80 euros. We could then say that the electronic cigarette is an ideal response to a problem that has lasted far too long. However, this is not the opinion of Martial Bodo, tobacco specialist at the Jules Bordet Institute who sees vaping as a simple "plan B":

» I am a tobacco specialist, but also a behavioral psychologist, and when it comes to electronic cigarettes, from a pulmonary point of view and from a point of view of risk factors on health, we have differences compared to inhalation smoke and carcinogens. But all in all, from a behavioral clutter point of view, when you want to free yourself from it, it's sometimes not enough. On the other hand, if you still want to be a consumer, but at lower risk, the electronic cigarette is a plan B which is perhaps not useless. «
