If in Belgium, one in five people smokes, it is currently almost 15% of the population who have already used the electronic cigarette.

ELECTRONIC CIGARETTE: A REAL USE PROGRESSION!

The use of electronic cigarettes continues to increase. Among the Belgian population between 15 and 75 years old, 14% have already used an electronic cigarette, against 10% in 2015. This information emerges from the 2017 tobacco survey of the Foundation against cancer published last Tuesday.

While it is better not to smoke at all, experts consider that electronic cigarettes are less harmful to health than traditional cigarettes. But nearly two-thirds of vapers combine electronic cigarettes with other tobacco products, which represents a very low health benefit, notes the Foundation against cancer.

Only 34% use it in order to quit smoking. According to the survey, conducted during the summer of 2017 with a representative sample of 3.000 people, the population largely supports the adoption of new anti-smoking measures. Thus, 93% of Belgians are in favor of a ban on smoking in the car in the presence of minors. Smokers themselves are in favor (88%) and 74% of them would also find it serious that their children start smoking.

More than the majority (55%) are also in favor of the introduction of neutral packages (without logo or attractive colors), as is already the case in France, the United Kingdom and Ireland. The Foundation against cancer calls on our political leaders to stop procrastinating and adopt these two measures as soon as possible.
