CANADA: Students worried about the use of e-cigarettes in schools.

The noose is tightening around the e-cigarette in Canada. Recently, it's a young man from LaSalle, Petar Bratic who testified against the use of e-cigarettes by teens at a meeting of his local school board.

"IT IS DIFFICULT TO DETECT WHO IS VAPOTING OR NOT"

All types of students do it, even the gifted ones, he said. The teenager adds that even his friend who scores 98% in math is vaping. Petar Bratic, who attends Sandwich High School, congratulates the Chatham-Kent Public Health Unit for fining seven students who vaped in their schoolyard. Management contacted the Health Unit, citing the Smoke-Free Ontario Act.

Young people vape in bathrooms and classrooms, even in the presence of teachers, according to Bratic. Sharon Pyke, the Superintendent of Education for the Greater Essex County Board of Education, says he is more and more difficult to detect who vapes and who does not. She adds that vaping devices are smaller and easier to hide than before.

« If you had told me about this issue a year ago, I would have told you that we have no issues with vaping, but this year is different. »She declares.

A “HEALTH RISK” DUE TO VAPING?

Young people are reported to be vaping on buses and on school grounds, according to the superintendent. Chatham-Kent and Windsor-Essex Public Health Units both report an increase in the number of students vaping.

In a 2016-2017 survey, Statistics Canada notes that one in 10 adolescents admits to having smoked an electronic cigarette in the past month.

Petar Bratic considers the smell of electronic cigarettes to be bothersome. He also says that at school, some young people blow smoke while the teachers are not watching. Mr. Bratic also talks about the health damage from vaping, to smokers as well as to the people around them.

According to Eric NadalinAs the Director of Disease Prevention and Chronic Injury at the Windsor-Essex Health Unit, the growing number of young vapers worries his organization, as e-cigarettes may contain nicotine. According to him " It is possible that these young people become dependent on these products. »
