CANADA: Drop in smoking rate, vaping is therefore not a "gateway"!

In a recent press release from theCanadian Vaping Association (CVA) it is about the correction of a study published in The BMJ in 2019 who claimed that there was a significant increase in the rate of smoking among young people after years of decline. With the recent correction, it was concluded that the rate of smoking among young people continued to decline, demonstrating that vaping is not a gateway to smoked tobacco.

COMMUNIQUE: A CORRECTION THAT MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE!

The study "Prevalence of vaping and smoking among adolescents in Canada, England and the United States: Repeated national cross-sectional surveys", published in The BMJ in 2019, claimed that there was a significant increase in the rate of smoking among young people after years of decline, alarming many health authorities and parents across the country.

Many have cited vaping as the reason for the sudden increase in smoking rates among young people. However, the publication of Health Canada's “Canadian Student Smoking, Alcohol and Drugs Survey” (CSTADS) forced a correction published in The BMJ.

“In the original BMJ article, changes in the prevalence of smoking over the last 30 days between 2017 and 2018 in Canada were 10,7% to 15,5% (a statistically significant increase), which has been revised after rebalancing from 10,7% to 10,0% (non-significant change) ”, can we read in the update.

With this correction, it was concluded that the rate of smoking among young people continues to decline, demonstrating that vaping is not a gateway to combustible tobacco. “ACV has always been a proponent of protecting young people from nicotine addiction. We are pleased to see that inaccurate information is being corrected, as the erroneous statistics previously reported in this study were used to justify legislation against the most effective harm reduction product on the market, ”said Darryl Tempest, executive director of ACV.

The Royal College of Physicians has concluded for the sixth consecutive year that vaping is at least 95% less harmful than smoking. Vaping is a tool for adult smokers aimed at harm reduction. It is not intended for use by young people or non-smokers. Vaping has repeatedly proven to be the most effective cessation product available in the world, with smokers having an 83% greater chance of successfully quitting through vaping than with any other cessation product.

As a society, we all strive to ensure that young people are safe from harm. As such, it is absolutely essential that studies regarding the dangers of vaping among young people be accurate, as many steps that can be taken to protect young people have adverse effects on adult smokers seeking a harm reduction tool. .

Data analysis now accurately shows that there is no association between youth vaping and tobacco use. Vaping is the most effective harm reduction tool, not a gateway to smoking, and the law must take this into account in order to save the lives of millions of Canadian smokers.
