CANADA: At war with the menthol capsule cigarette!

The Canadian Cancer Society is making an exit against the arrival on the market of the menthol capsule cigarette.

camelThis new cigarette has just appeared on the shelves of convenience stores in Canada. The Canadian Cancer Society explains that when pressure is exerted on the filter, the capsule shatters and releases a dose of menthol aroma that makes the smoking experience less brutal. She considers this product to be a threat to youth.

« It is a very surprising test that a tobacco manufacturer is going to market a new menthol cigarette, with capsules in the filter, just before it is prohibited by law. For us, this is worrying. Teens will try it, experience it because it is attractive to them, and they will become addicted before this law comes into effect. Says Rob Cunningham, senior policy analyst at the Canadian Cancer Society.

Several provinces in Canada have legislated to make this type of product illegal. Laws are already in effect in Nova Scotia and Alberta. In New Brunswick, the law that will prohibit the use of flavors in tobacco products will come into force on January 1. The Canadian Cancer Society does not intend to stop there. She calls on Justin Trudeau's new government to modernize the tobacco law, which dates back to 1997.

« The new federal health minister, Jane Philpott, is being asked to renew the federal law because it is almost two decades old. It needs to be changed so that in [the future] this type of thing by the tobacco industry cannot happen. Adds Mr. Cunningham.

The Canadian Cancer Society points out that the 15 Sept 2015, the US Food and Drug Administration has ordered the removal of cigarettes with Camel Crush menthol capsule. She adds that the 28 countries of the European Union will ban menthol capsules from May 20, 2016.
