CANADA: The Canadian Medical Association wants to toughen the rules of the vape!

In Canada, a recommendation from theCanadian Medical Association (AMC) to Health Canada has just been presented in a context where young people in North America have an increasing tendency to vape, including at school, with risks of nicotine addiction.

A RECOMMENDATION THAT IS LIKE A RESPONSE TO THE MINISTRY OF HEALTH?

Health Canada has a role to play in the face of the excessive exposure of young people to electronic cigarettes, especially the so-called new generation. It is attractively presented in packaging that is likely to appeal to younger people. Marketed with a lot of advertising, this cigarette quickly seduces different targets, especially among teenagers who use it to their heart's content, according to various studies in Canada and the United States.

According to a report published by the World Health Organization and the US National Cancer Institute, websites dedicated to the retail sale of electronic cigarettes " present themes that may be attractive to young people, including images or affirmations of modernity, improved social status or activity, romantic aspects and the use of celebrity electronic cigarettes ».

The situation would be worrying in some schools in Montreal and Vancouver, where the management was forced to restrict access to the toilet at times, to prevent young people use them for vaping, report Vincent Maisonneuve and Charles Ménard in a Radio-Canada report. The excessive use of this cigarette is not without risks for young people who are running towards nicotine addiction, with important effects on their health.

CMA PROPOSES TIGHTENED REGULATIONS!

The Canadian Minister of Health has recently expressed the wish to limit flavors to avoid this dependence, because manufacturers are ingenious, going to draw on the repertoire of confectionery and other desserts for make cigarettes more attractive to young people.

« With attractive flavoring agents and prominent displays, the use of e-cigarettes among young people is on the rise and raises growing concerns about their long-term health effects. Many teens see vaping as a harmless habit, but high-tech versions of these electronic cigarettes contain nicotine salts that contain more high concentrations of the product while reducing bitterness ", Noted the AMC.

Minister Ginette Petipas Taylor has launched a consultation to gather advice on the best way to frame the vaping initially recommended to adults to encourage them to quit smoking. The recommendations of the Canadian Medical Association could be seen as a response to this call from the Ministry of Health.

It is also, and above all, a solution proposal, following Health Canada's consultation on the impact of the advertising of vaping products on young people and non-users of tobacco products.

CMA recommends to Health Canada :

  • that the rules be tightened;
  • that the restrictions on the promotion of vaping products and devices be the same as those applied to tobacco products;
  • that the advertising of vaping products in all public places and in the audiovisual media be banned.
