CANADA: Tobacco and alcohol on the decline, vaping increases among young people

In Canada, fewer high school students are smoking, consuming alcohol or using cannabis, but vaping is experiencing a dramatic surge in this age group. Trends reported byQuebec survey on tobacco, alcohol, drugs and gambling among high school students (STADJES), made public Thursday by the Institut de la statistique du Québec.

VAPING POPULARITY EXPLOSION

There is a real explosion in the popularity of vaping among young Quebecers. These are the main trends of the 2019 report of the Quebec survey on tobacco, alcohol, drugs and gambling among high school students (STADJES), made public Thursday by the Institut de la statistique du Québec. The report shows the progression of data between 2013 and 2019.

Dr. Nicholas chadi, a pediatric drug addiction researcher at CHU Sainte-Justine is worried about the explosion in popularity of vaping, which rose from 4% in 2013 to 21% in 2019, in secondary five. "  No matter how much vaping is classified as a smoking cessation tool, it does not apply to young people. "

The vast majority of young people who vape are not smokers. We are in a completely different problem. You really have to think about vaping as an addictive risky behavior in its due form. "

The data in the report also shows that about one in 10 students vape every day. Dr Chadi adds that " the more young you are a vaper who becomes addicted to nicotine, the more likely you are to try and become addicted to cannabis products. There are several studies on this. "
