CANADA: A program to curb the "scourge" of vaping in schools

« It is a plague. This is the new way to consume tobacco or nicotine products", the tone is set in Quebec (Canada) or a prevention program " Smoke-free generation » has just seen the light of day. It aims to fight against smoking but especially vaping among young people.

" YOUNG PEOPLE WANT TO STOP VAPING "

In Quebec, electronic cigarettes seem to have become an even bigger problem than smoking. A “Smoke-Free Generation” prevention program, which aims to fight against smoking and vaping among young people, has just been launched in seven secondary schools in the Capitale-Nationale region.

Plans vary from school to school. At Mont-Sainte-Anne high school, for example, QR codes placed everywhere lead to videos to raise awareness about vaping. We can also meet the vapers who wish so that they can stop their consumption.

It is a plague. This is the new way to consume tobacco or nicotine products, finds Dominic Boivin, physical education teacher at Mont-Sainte-Anne high school and project partner.

Young people want to quit vaping and they want the tools to do so. The plan for a smoke-free generation responds to these needs, Explain Annie papageorgiou, Executive Director of the Quebec Council on Tobacco and Health (CQTS).

Three objectives are on the “Smoke-Free Generation” program : prevent the initiation of tobacco products, encourage those who use to quit and ensure the application of the law, since it is prohibited to sell or give vaping products to people under 18 years of age.
