CINEMA: Must we forbid at least 18 years smoking scenes?

Too many cigarettes in the cinema? The WHO advocates banning films that feature someone smoking under the age of 18. RMC went to the exit of the dark rooms of a cinema in the 15th arrondissement of Paris, to find out how spectators would welcome such a measure.

Should we forbid the 18 years in the movies in which we smoke cigarettes ? This is a recommendation from the World Health Organization (WHO), formulated in a recent report. The cigarette is considered too present on the screen, which would encourage the youngest spectators to start smoking.

The WHO reports that among American teens, 37% of new smokers have followed the example set in the movies, according to studies in the United States. In 2014, tobacco consumption appeared in 44% of all films produced in Hollywood, and in 36% of films intended for children.

« The cigarette associated with fabulous images, it shocks me »

The leading cause of preventable mortality in France, active smoking is considered to be responsible for 90% of lung cancer and 73 premature deaths each year in our country, according to the National Institute for Prevention and Health Education (INPES ).

RMC went to the exit of the dark rooms of a cinema in the 15th arrondissement of Paris. And spectators say they are sensitive to the presence of cigarettes. The hero of Break Point smoke a cigarette after climbing a mountain. For Rachid, who saw the film with his son, this image does not pass at all.

« We have images that are fabulous and at the same time, we have the cigarette that is associated with that. It shocks me !“, He tells the microphone of RMC.

« Directors would realize what they're doing«

The WHO suggests banning films in which tobacco is consumed by children under 18. Michèle Delaunay, Socialist deputy president of the Alliance against tobacco, approves.

« Prohibiting minors from films with unjustified smoking scenes necessarily reduces the audience“, She explains. " Directors would realize the gravity of what they are doing"

Jean-Pierre Mocky is a director, screenwriter, actor and producer. For him, this ban would have no impact on cigarette consumption:

« They imagine that, because we won't see people smoking in films, people will smoke less: it's silly, there is no connection!«

According to the WHO, tobacco kills nearly six million people each year worldwide.
