PRESS RELEASE: New Tobacco Prices Will Come Into Force In January 2018

A decree of homologation of the prices of the tobacco was published in the Official Journal of the French Republic, Saturday 16 december 2017. The new tobacco prices approved will come into effect on Tuesday 2 January 2018.

APPROVAL OF RETAIL PRICES FOR TOBACCO

  • JORF 0293 16 December 2017 - text n ° 64: decree of 13 December 2017 amending the decree of 24 June 2016 approving the retail prices of tobacco manufactured in France, excluding the overseas departments [www.legifrance.gouv .Fr]

The average price of the package 20 cigarettes is slightly down, 5 cents, after an increase of 30 cents since November 13. The increase in prices of tobacco products since the November 12 is therefore 25 cents.
Two thirds of 20 cigarettes packets will keep a price equal to or greater than 7 euros. The approved prices of packets of 20 cigarettes are from 6,70 euros to 8,10 euros.

About three quarters of 30 grams jokes will keep a price equal to or greater than 8,50 euros. The approved prices of 30 grams jokes are from 7,20 euros to 10,70 euros.

These price changes, which result from the initiative of some tobacco manufacturers, are therefore consistent with the timetable and the expected result of the increase in the taxation of tobacco products.

As part of its public health policy and in accordance with the commitments of the President of the Republic, the Government has decided an increase in the price of tobacco by setting a price target of 20 cigarettes 10 package in November 2020. Thus, the next tobacco price approval, which will take effect in early March 2018, will take into account the increase in the taxation of tobacco products voted in the Social Security Financing Bill for 2018. The expected rise in prices of 20 cigarettes packets is in the range of 1 euro.

The government is determined to encourage smokers to stop smoking and accompany them, and to make tobacco products less accessible and attractive to young people.

For the record, in the European Union, the prices of tobacco products are set freely by the manufacturers. In France, reference price changes proposed by manufacturers are jointly approved by the Directorate General of Customs and Excise and the Directorate-General for Health.
