HEATED TOBACCO MAKES A CARDBOARD IN SOUTH KOREA!

According to data released by the South Korean government on Friday, sales of heated tobacco stood at 92 million packs in the first quarter of this year, a significant increase of 34% from last year. One pack contains 20 sticks of heated tobacco.

The market share of this type of cigarettes, including IQOS de Phillip Morris et lil de KT&G Corp, South Korea's largest tobacco maker, climbed to 11,8% at the end of March, up from 2,2% two years ago. In May 2017, Phillip Morris launched the iQOS brand in South Korea, the first hot-selling tobacco device on the South Korean market.

The Ministry of Health and Social Affairs attributes this trend to the aggressive advertising and promotional activities of manufacturers who insist that these products are less harmful than conventional cigarettes.

In order to counter this upward trend in sales, the ministry announced that it plans to revise the legislation next year to require putting pictures and warning notices on packages and devices of heated tobacco. Since the end of 2016, a law has forced images and warnings to be placed on traditional cigarette packages to raise awareness of the harmful health effects of tobacco as part of efforts to reduce the country's smoking rate.
