COVID-19: Will Quebec consider vaping as an essential service?

Should e-cigarettes and other vaping products be considered essential, and electronic cigarette stores reopened? In Canada and especially in Quebec, the question has been posed for a few days now. An association representing some 300 vaping professionals (manufacturers, sellers and online businesses) has decided to defend itself before what it considers to be an unjustified bias on the part of Quebec with regard to this practice, it has filed a request for injunction in Superior Court to make these products available.

EIGHT CANADIAN PROVINCES IS CONCERNED ABOUT VAPING… BUT NOT QUEBEC!

In the current context, with the postponement of all cases deemed non-essential, the request for an injunction will probably not be heard for weeks, specifies in an interview John xydous, Regional Director of the Canadian Vaping Association.

« The vast majority of vapers depend on products that can only be found in specialized shops, he argues in an open letter to Prime Minister François Legault and sent to The Press. Directing them to a convenience store to buy unknown products, stronger in nicotine and which for the most part are produced by tobacco companies, is illusory […].

At least eight Canadian provinces, reports Mr. Xydous, have granted an exception making vaping products an essential service.

The steps for Quebec to follow suit began on March 23, he explains, and it was not until last Saturday that the association learned that there was no question that vaping products benefit from 'an exemption. Currently, these products are only available, with very limited choices, in certain convenience stores and gas stations, as stores are not allowed to continue operating.

For Mr. Xydous, as for many vaping enthusiasts, e-cigarettes and vaping products are essential products, at least in the same way as alcohol and cannabis. He views with some skepticism the indications that vaping, like smoking, should be avoided in the presence of COVID-19, which attacks the lungs. " You have to look at all the studies, and the consensus of the British authorities is that the electronic cigarette has about 5% of the harmful effects of cigarettes. It should not be forgotten that those who vape often have a history of former tobacco smoker. »
