Everyone will have their own idea of this controversial writer. In serotonin, Michel Houellebecq pushes criticism of the modern world even further. It is not only cynical or nihilistic, but radically nostalgic. Houellebecq criticizes the departure of the religion described by the philosopher Marcel Gauchet.
But obviously it is a particular point that interests us and we will not have to look very far to find it. From the start of “Sérotonine”, Michel Houellebecq seems to highlight the dependence of the French on tobacco, anti-depressants and nicotine. His fictional character, Florent-Claude Labrouste is “forty-six years old” and describes his large dependencies:
“The relief that the first puff brings me is immediate, astonishingly violent. Nicotine is a perfect drug, a simple and hard drug which brings no joy, which is defined entirely by the lack, and the cessation of the lack. "
A reflection that will obviously not fail to talk specialists in the field. But without surprise with Sérotonine, Michel Houellebecq definitely wins his place in the accursed pantheon of anti-modern writers.
