E-CIGARETTE: The E-cig Symposium succeeds the Tobacco-free Me (s)

The day after the end of the first tobacco-free month, an initiative launched in November by the Ministry of Health, La Rochelle today hosts the first scientific congress exclusively dedicated to electronic cigarettes, the " Ecig Symposium Which is therefore over two days.

This event, which brings together experts from fourteen nationalities, aims to take stock of the latest data concerning the great forgotten of the month without tobacco: the e-cigarette. Fully recommended as a tool to help with smoking cessation by the British health authorities, it is still only timidly encouraged in France. The E-cig Symposium will present the latest research findings on the potential of new nicotine delivery devices in the form of electronic cigarettes, and more broadly, aerosol therapy. Devices that, for the first time, can reveal potentially effective treatment solutions to quit smoking with comfort and pleasure.

"Aith this congress, the idea is to answer questions from political decision-makers and the general public on this product which only existed in a very embryonic way five years ago, and which is evolving at a frantic pace.Explains the Professor Bertrand Dautzenberg, pulmonologist at Pitié Salpêtrière-Charles Foix teaching hospitals.

E-LIQUID COMPOSITION AND VAPOR EMISSIONSdautzenberg44

On the agenda for these two days: The composition of liquids and steam emissions, the link between e-cigarettes and tobacco initiation among young people, biological effects ... "Since two years, we know what are the e-liquids, assures Professor Dautzenberg. The composition must be entered in a European database, which already has more than 50.000 references.Since May 2016, an Afnor standard enhances the quality of products.

If, in its opinion of April 2014, the High Council of Public Health considered that liquids had a low level of toxicity, the situation is different with their emissions, which may contain potentially toxic products. Metals, diacetyl and aldehydes can then be found in trace amounts in the inhaled vapor. "Studies show that normal use of an electronic cigarette, which we set at 200 puffs per day, is no more dangerous than exposure to indoor air for 24 hours or inhalation. certain drugs, details Professor Dautzenberg. Cigarette smoke contains carbon monoxide and carcinogens.»

On the one hand, the long-term effects of electronic cigarettes on the body are only just beginning to be explored. "There is still a lot of data missing to ensure the safety of this product, but it will always be less toxic than cigarettes, says Bertrand Dautzenberg. On the other hand, it is more toxic to smoke the electronic cigarette than to smoke nothing at all.».
