E-CIGARETTE: Aromatized e-liquids toxic to blood vessels?

While some cities in the United States currently prohibitt flavored e-liquids, a new study from the Boston University School of Medicine announces having detected a toxicity of aromas for blood vessels.

THE E-CIGARETTE DANGEROUS FOR BLOOD VESSELS?

Could flavored e-liquids cause bodily harm? This is the question that a team of researchers from the Boston University School of Medicine asked.

It is largely thanks to flavoring additives that the e-cigarette has succeeded in establishing itself as an alternative to tobacco products. While many studies have been done on the risks of e-cigarettes for the lungs, very few studies have looked at blood vessels and how aromas can affect the human body. More specifically, no study has directly examined the toxicity of flavored additives to blood vessels.

Researchers at the Faculty of Medicine of Boston University (BUSM) therefore studied the short-term effects of the products flavoring chemicals used in e-cigarettes on endothelial cells, cells that line the blood vessels. With this study, the researchers noted that when blood vessels were exposed to flavoring additives, chemicals normally released to promote blood flow decreased and increased inflammation. They also found that the endothelial cells of smokers showed the same toxicity as those treated with flavoring chemicals.

« Our results show that flavoring additives are toxic to blood vessels and have long-term harmful effects on cardiovascular toxicity similar to what can be seen with cigarettes." , Explain Jessica Fetterman, Ph.D., assistant professor of medicine at BUSM.

These results have been published in the journal Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology. The study was funded by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), the Center for Tobacco Products (CTP) of the FDA.
