E-CIGARETTE: Is there really a gateway effect to smoking among young people?

According to American researchers, vaping is a gateway to smoking. 17-18 youth who have never smoked and are using e-cigarettes would be four times more likely than others to switch to the conventional cigarette stage. And yet, in an article published by our colleagues in Vaping Post it is clearly emphasized that " the e-cigarette will not be responsible for increasing the number of young smokers"

« SPEAKING ADOLESCENTS ARE MORE AT RISK OF STARTING TO SMOKE«

Le Pr Richard Miech and his team at the University of Michigan are piloting an epidemiological study that follows 50 adolescents aged 000 to 13 each year. Baptized Monitoring the Future, this work started in 1975. For the follow-up concerning the use of the electronic cigarette and the risk of smoking, 347 participants were integrated.

« Our results show that teens who are vaping are at higher risk of starting to smoke than those who do not smoke. », Underlines Miech. Which cites mainly social reasons: " they will go more to groups of smokers. Not to mention that they are convinced of the safety of these products as they do not perceive immediate health risks ».

TWO AMERICAN HEALTH EXPERTS ANNOUNCE CONTRARY

And yet, the discourse is not the same among two American public health experts, Lynn Kozlowski and Kenneth Warner, who have reviewed recent studies devoted to the relationship that young Americans maintain with electronic cigarettes and tobacco. The conclusion he proposes is clear: “the use of the electronic cigarette by young people will not be responsible for increasing the number of smokers in the future".

They do not hesitate to stigmatize messages that sow confusion and are part of an absolute risk perspective, while it is necessary to have a risk reduction approach in the fight against tobacco. Lynn Kozlowski and Kenneth Warner present two studies that found that age restrictions on purchasing e-cigarettes have been associated with increased rates of smoking.
