SCOTLAND: Towards a major restriction on e-cigarette advertising?

In Scotland, the government is seriously considering strengthening and advertising and promotion rules for e-cigarettes. A recent consultation on vaping should also help parliamentarians finalize this regulation.

A RESTRICTION FOR “ PROTECT YOUTH«

In order to " protect the youth "and adults" non smokers“, the Scottish government is considering restricting vaping product advertising quite heavily. Unlike its English neighbor, Scotland seems to want to hit hard on the e-cigarette considered too "attractive".

In this context, the country's government proposes to restrict:

– Advertising for these products on billboards, billboards, buses and other vehicles, through the distribution of brochures and leaflets, and their placement on mobile video devices;

– The distribution of free or reduced price samples;

– The sponsorship of an activity, an event or a person;

These proposals would also concern e-liquids that do not contain nicotine. Indeed, the government considers that all e-liquids contain potentially dangerous chemicals.

The Adolescent Lifestyle and Substance Use Survey (SALSUS) 2018 in the country showed that the use of e-cigarettes by young people increased in the three years since 2015, with the percentage of 13-year-old non-smokers who tried them increasing from 13% to 15% and for those aged 15 from 24% to 28%.
