ECSMOKE: A Lyon hospital center is looking for volunteers for a study on e-cigarettes

Launched at the end of 2018, the ECSMOKE study, coordinated by Assistance Publique - Hôpitaux de Paris, aims to assess the effectiveness of e-cigarettes, as an aid to smoking cessation, with regard to the reference drug in the area: varenicline. Today, the Saint-Joseph Saint-Luc hospital in Lyon is looking for volunteers who will be accompanied free of charge for six months by tobacco specialists.

There are now more than 2 million vapers in France, however, knowledge relating to the effectiveness of these products and the possible risk associated with their use, is not significant enough to position the e-cigarette as an aid. at smoking cessation.

Launched at the end of 2018, the ECSMOKE study, coordinated by the Assistance Publique - Hôpitaux de Paris, aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the electronic cigarette, as an aid to stopping smoking, with regard to the reference drug in the field: varenicline. Thirteen health facilities are involved in this national project. The Saint-Joseph Saint-Luc Hospital Center being the only hospital mobilized in the Rhône.

This four-year study plans to include at least 650 people. These volunteers will be accompanied for free for six months by tobacco specialists. They will benefit from a personalized follow-up, advice of assistance to the cessation of the tobacco, and will receive a kit composed of an electronic cigarette and the necessary liquids (with or without nicotine), but also of tablets (drug of reference of help with smoking cessation or placebo) to take every day.

The volunteers will be randomly divided into three groups: "Placebo Group", "Nicotine Group" and "Control Group / Varenicline". *

To participate in this study, you must :

  • Smoking at least 10 cigarettes daily, for at least one year
  • To have between 18 and 70 years
  • Be motivated to stop smoking
