ESTONIA: Suspension of taxes on vaping to support the fight against smoking.

SUSPENSION OF TAXES ON E-LIQUIDS

Estonia which ranks third in Europe for tobacco-related deaths has changed course completely and has just made a courageous decision to defend the fight against smoking. Indeed, a few days ago, The Riigikogu, the unicameral parliament of the Republic of Estonia, adopted an amendment to the law exempting e-liquids from excise duty until the end of 2022.

Tarmo Kruusimae, chairman of the Riigikogu Smoke-Free Estonia Support Group, said the amendment would help save the health of the Estonian people. " As of June 1, 2018, an extremely high excise duty on e-cigarette liquids entered into force in Estonia, which allowed the black market and cross-border trade to flourish. By suspending the collection of excise duties for two years, we give traders the opportunity to lower the prices of e-liquid products “, Said Kruusimäe.

The changes will come into effect on April 1, 2021. According to the changes, excise duties on e-liquids will be suspended until the end of 2022. By suspending the collection of excise duties, entrepreneurs will be able to reduce the price of e-liquids and thus encourage users to buy products in Estonian outlets, and not in the border trade or on the black market.
