UNITED STATES: The number of smokers has never been lower!

The cigarette is becoming less popular in the United States, where health authorities announced Thursday that the number of smokers had reached 14% of the population, the lowest level ever recorded in the country.

STILL 34 MILLIONS OF SMOKERS IN THE COUNTRY!

Some 34 million American adults smoke, according to an 2017 study conducted by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). A year earlier, in 2016, the smoking rate was 15,5%.

The number of smokers is down to 67% compared to 1965, the first year of data collection by the National Health Interview Surveyaccording to the CDC report. " This new lower figure (...) is a huge public health success storyCommented the director of the CDC Robert Redfield.

The study also shows a significant drop among young adult smokers compared to the previous year: about 10% of Americans aged 18 to 24 years smoked in 2017. They were 13% in 2016.

At the same time, the use of e-cigarettes has increased sharply among young people. The authorities are planning to ban the fragrances that are supposed to attract them, used in electronic cigarettes.

One in five American adults (47 million) continue to consume a tobacco product - cigarettes, cigars, e-cigarettes, hookahs, smokeless tobacco (snuff, chew, etc.) - a number which has remained constant in recent years.

The cigarette is still the leading cause of preventable illness and death in the United States, and kills about 480 000 Americans each year. About 16 million Americans suffer from tobacco-related diseases.

«For more than half a century, smoking has been the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States", said Norman Sharpless, the director of the National Cancer Institute. " Eliminating smoking in the United States would help prevent about one in three cancer deaths He recalled.
