USA: Women more affected by lung cancer than men

In the United States, women between 30 and 54 years old are more and more affected by lung cancer, according to a new study. If tobacco remains a very important cause of cancer, it is not the only one!

TOBACCO CONSUMPTION HAS INCREASED IN WOMEN!

Men have always been more affected than women by lung cancer. But the trend seems to be reversing in the United States: a new study reveals that this disease now concerns more women than men.

This research, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, explain that over the past two decades, the incidence of lung cancer has declined overall but that this decline particularly affects men. Women between 30 and 54 years would be more concerned than men by this disease.

« Smoking problems don't fully explain this« , precise Otis Brawley, chief medical officer of the American Cancer Society, who participated in the study. And for good reason: if tobacco consumption has increased among women, it has not exceeded that of men.

The authors of the study therefore specify that tobacco alone does not explain this phenomenon. If additional research is needed, they put forward other hypotheses: stopping smoking which would occur later in women, lung cancer which would be more common in women who have never smoked or even a possible more high sensitivity of women to the harmful effects of tobacco.

Another assumption: the decrease in exposure to asbestos, another cause of lung cancer, which would have benefited men more.
