UNITED STATES: In Utah, young people who drink alcohol are vapers ...

In the United States, we often come across surprising or even eccentric studies… This time it was in Utah that a study found that young people who consume alcohol are for a large majority users of electronic cigarettes.

TOWARDS A DECADENT GENERATION COMPOSED OF ALCOHOLIC VAPOTE?

The Utah Department of Health and the Utah Department of Human Resources collaborated on a study that showed high rates of young people who in addition to consuming alcohol are e-cigarette users.

Karlee Adams, head of the tobacco prevention and control program in Utah says: " Nicotine is highly addictive and most people who use tobacco products become addicted before the age of 19 »

The Student Health and Risk Prevention Survey (SHARP) is run every odd-numbered year and asks questions about physical and mental health, substance abuse, and other behaviors.

According to this study, 59,8% of Utah youth who reported consuming alcohol in the past 30 days also reported using e-cigarettes or vaping products. According to the results, there would be in comparison only 23,1% of young people who would have declared to have smoked cigarettes and consumed alcohol during the last 30 days. 11% of the students surveyed declared themselves to be electronic cigarette users, almost 9% declared to consume alcohol and about 3% declared to be smokers.

Obviously, this “study” is not trivial and has a clear aim, which is to regulate electronic cigarettes more strongly. In its findings, the study states that the best way to reduce alcohol and tobacco consumption among Utah youth is to limit outlets and restrict advertising.

The report also recommends stricter enforcement of laws that prohibit adults from giving alcohol or tobacco products to young people.

« We know that alcohol and nicotine can affect adolescent brain development. The use of these products alone or in combination can have consequences in adulthood " , said Susannah Burt, Prevention Program Manager for the Addiction and Mental Health Division.
