UNITED STATES: New York City attacks smokers and vapers.

Recently, the mayor of New York approved a series of measures intended to reduce the number of smokers but also of vapers in the American financial capital. Increase in the price of tobacco, compulsory license for vaping shops, everything is done to limit smoking and vaping.

LIMIT HALF THE NUMBER OF E-CIGARETTE SHOPS.

The seven measures signed on Monday notably increase the minimum price of a packet of cigarettes sold in New York to 13 dollars, against 10,5 dollars so far. That is the highest price in the United States, according to some American media.

If many outlets already apply such tariffs, the average is currently 11,23 dollars per pack, according to the Municipal Department of Health.

« Even though tobacco is one of the leading causes of premature death in the country, the tobacco giants will stop at nothing to get people addicted to these deadly products"Said the Democratic mayor Bill of Blasio, whose predecessor Michael Bloomberg had already made the fight against tobacco one of his great causes.

« We send the very clear message that we will no longer let their greed kill New Yorkers (…). These new measures will not only help reduce the number of smokers in our city but also save lives“, Said the mayor, who is seeking a new mandate in November.

The goal is to continue the decline in the number of smokers recorded since 2002, with nearly 160.000 tobacco users, they are 900.000 out of 8,5 million inhabitants less by 2020, the town hall said in a statement, estimating that 12.000 New Yorkers died from tobacco in New York each year.

Among other measures announced: a new tax 10% will hit tobacco products other than cigarettes. She should bring back a million dollars that will abound the kitty of the town hall for the ubiquitous problem of housing.

The city also intends to reduce the number of points of sale by half, by limiting the allocation of new licenses, by increasing the cost of renewing existing licenses and by not renewing the approximately 550 licenses granted to drugstore chains. .

Electronic cigarettes are not spared: points of sale will now have to have a license with, again, the objective of reducing their number by half.
