STUDY: Flavored e-liquids harmful to the heart?

According to a new US study, the flavors contained in e-liquids for electronic cigarettes could cause mutations or even damage to the cells of the heart muscle.

NICE AROMAS FOR THE HEART OF VAPOTEURS?

Matthew A. Nystoriak from the University of Louisville in Kentucky and his team recently presented the results of a study on the use of aromas at the 2017 American Heart Association (AHA) Scientific Sessions. The scientific journal Circulation also published their results.

The preliminary lab research examined 15 chemicals used to flavor e-liquids such as cinnamon, clove, and both heated and unheated citrus fruits. The researchers discovered that some of the flavors used could be harmful to the heart muscles.

Indeed, according to their analyzes and studies, cinnamon flavor, for example, would prevent cardiomyocytes, the cells that make up the heart muscle, from contracting for a certain period of time after contact. Eugenol (clove), citronellol and limonene (citrus) would help speed up the heart rate.

According to Nystoriak These effects are quite striking as they suggest that if this compound interacts with the heart muscle itself, it could change the functioning of these cells »

He also adds that chemicals that could cause the most damage to cells have an effect even before they are heated. However, there are still many questions about how these products can affect the heart.

Although not involved in this study, Matthew L. Springer, a professor of medicine at the University of California, said that these chemicals "generally recognized as safe" are not necessarily safe for inhalation.

« One should not assume that the electronic cigarette is safe because it does not produce smoke, ”he continued. “The best thing you can inhale is clean air. »
