Following the many controversies taking place in the United States, it is not surprising to find today in France a study which targets e-cigarettes and young people. Indeed, a recent study by Inserm financed by the League against cancer shows that 52% of 17-year-olds have already tried e-cigarettes.
YOUNG VAPOTORS ARE ALSO YOUNG SMOKERS!
According to the first results of research conducted by Inserm as part of a project called Petal, a study program on adolescent smoking with a view to limiting it shows that more than one in two 17-year-old adolescents have already experimented with e-cigarettes, almost as much as cigarettes (than 2% of young people of this age have already tested at least once). On the other hand, the e-cigarette is reserved for occasional use. While a quarter of 59 year olds smoke every day, only 17% of them vape daily, and 2 in 1 occasionally.
Everyone feared that the e-cigarette would be a gateway to tobacco for teens, but this research seems to rule out this hypothesis. The 17 year olds who test the electronic cigarette have already experimented with tobacco before so it is always tobacco that comes first and not the other way around. However, we cannot say that the drop in tobacco consumption among these teens is linked to electronic cigarettes since 63% of vapers are also regular or daily cigarette smokers. It is therefore rather a product that is combined with other risky behaviors, tobacco but also alcohol and drugs.
While there are as many girls who smoke cigarettes as boys at 17, boys are more likely to vape (21% of them do so occasionally compared to 13% of girls). So many avenues and data that researchers will continue to explore. Remember that the sale of electronic cigarettes is normally prohibited for those under the age of 18.
