STUDY: Double e-cigarette / tobacco consumption does not reduce cardiovascular risk

There are many "vapor-smokers"! And yet, if the intention is right, smoking cigarettes and using e-cigarettes would not reduce cardiovascular risk. In any case, this is what a new study led by researchers from the Boston University School of Public Health (BUSPH).

THE VAPE / TOBACCO COMBINATION IS NOT THE RIGHT SOLUTION!

A new study conducted by researchers from the Boston University School of Public Health (BUSPH), published in the journal "Circulation" reveals that e-cigarettes combined with smoking may not reduce risk of cardiovascular disease.

« The dual use of cigarettes / e-cigarettes appears to be as harmful to cardiovascular health as exclusive smoking, ”says lead author of the study, Dr. Andrew Stokes. According to this specialist, about 68% of people in the United States who “vape” also smoke traditional cigarettes.

“If e-cigarettes are used to quit smoking, cigarettes should be completely replaced and a plan to get free from all tobacco products should be advised. » To come to this conclusion, the researchers used data from 7130 participants in the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) study.

The long delay between exposure to tobacco and the onset of cardiovascular disease makes it difficult to measure in the short term how new tobacco products, such as e-cigarettes, affect cardiovascular health. This is why the researchers instead looked for the presence of two precise biomarkers (characteristic measurable with precision, used as an indicator of a function of the body, a disease or the action of a drug) in all these volunteers: cardiovascular inflammation and oxidative stress, two known predictors of cardiovascular events such as heart attacks (myocardial infarction) and heart failure.

They then found that participants who vaped exclusively were no more likely to suffer from cardiovascular inflammation or oxidative stress than participants who neither smoked nor vaped. But participants who smoked and vape both were no less likely to show these biomarkers than participants who smoked traditional cigarettes exclusively.

The scientific team specifies that a " growing body of research points to other areas of health harmed by vaping », And this is not the first time that she has worked on this subject herself, since one of her previous studies indicated that vaping alone can increase the risk of respiratory disease by more than 40%.
