STUDY: E-cig less addictive than tobacco?

E-cigarettes are less addictive than conventional cigarettes, it is the demonstration of this Penn study that, beyond this initial conclusion, helps to improve understanding of how different nicotine delivery devices lead to the addiction.

If the popularity of e-cigarettes is booming, we must not forget that the device exposes many ingredients, nicotine, propylene glycol, glycerin and flavors via inhalation vapor, and whose long-term effects remain largely unknown. In addition, to the lack of prior art is added the diversity of devices, currently more than 400 brands of e-cigarettes available on the market.

Dr. Jonathan Foulds, Professor of Public Health and Psychiatry at the Penn State College of Medicine, lead author of the study, to circumvent this hurdle and evaluate an average degree of dependence on the e-cigarette vs. conventional cigarette, developed a survey online, thus including questions to assess previous levels of dependence, when consuming conventional cigarettes. More than 3.500 current users of e-cigarettes, previously smokers of tobacco responded to the survey.

The analysis reveals two important points :

  • A higher concentration of nicotine in the liquid and / or the use of second generation device, which brings a higher exposure to nicotine predicts addiction.

Frequent use of the device is also associated with a higher degree of dependence. Until then, nothing too surprising.

  • More interestingly, regular e-cigarette users nevertheless still have a much lower dependency score than that observed with the consumption of conventional cigarettes. Overall, the researchers explain this second result by a lower exposure to nicotine with e-cigarettes, including “latest generation”.

Admittedly, these results again suggest the possible interest of the e-cigarette in smoking cessation, among former smokers ”. However, the authors point out that the American Agency, the FDA has not approved these devices for this use and that the e-cigarette can in no way be considered as a smoking cessation tool. In France, it is the same, these devices are not currently indicated for smoking cessation. No type of electronic cigarette has a marketing authorization (AMM). Electronic cigarettes cannot be sold in pharmacies because they are not on the list of products authorized for dispensation there. Due to their current status as a consumer product, e-cigarettes are exempt from drug regulation and controls for tobacco products.
