STUDY: The e-cigarette-tobacco gateway effect is back.

According to a US study, non-smoking adolescents who test electronic cigarettes are more likely to start smoking compared to those who have never tried vaping and 20% of young people who have tested e-cigarettes before smoking become regular smokers in the following year.

Controversial VapingAccording to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA)young vapers who have never smoked a conventional cigarette are more likely to fall into smoking than those who have not tested the e-cigarette. To achieve this, researchers followed 2 338 American high school students for more than a year. The study began in 2013. Adolescents, who averaged 15 years, were asked about their habits regarding vaping and smoking. Questionnaires were conducted throughout the study period to monitor the evolution of their consumption (vaping and tobacco).

At the start of the study, the vast majority of students surveyed said they had not vaped in the past 30 days, while 4% said they had vaped once or twice and 5% of respondents had vaped more than twice over the same period.

1 regular vaper on 5 has become a regular smokersmoking

Six months later, 20% of vapers regular have become regular smokers and 12% of them have become occasional smokers, the study reveals. In occasional vapers (those who had tested once or twice at the beginning of the study), 9% have become occasional smokers and 5% have become regular smokers six months after their first vaping.

For comparison, young people who have never tried the electronic cigarette were only 2% to be switched to conventional cigarettes on an occasional or regular basis.

Old vapers smoke more cigarettes

The study also states that older vapers tend to smoke more cigarettes than smokers who have not gone through the box " E-Cigarette"

Le vapotage participants in 2013, whatever the frequency, is linked to cigarette consumption which may be four times greater than that of young people who have never vaped, the researchers report. " This work must be taken into account by the public authorities to reconsider the accessibility of the e-cigarette to adolescents« , They conclude.
