STUDY: A smoker is 20% more likely to quit smoking if exposed to vaping.

This is an interesting new study coming to us from the UK. According to the findings of this study, smokers who regularly spend time with vapers are more likely to try to quit smoking.

THE CONTACT BETWEEN SMOKERS AND SPOILERS CAN PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE!

The study, published in BMC Medicine financed by Cancer Research UK, revealed that smokers regularly exposed to vapers (compared to other smokers) were about 20% more likely to report having a strong motivation to quit smoking at the same time and a recent attempt to quit.

It is becoming more common for smokers to come in contact with vapers and there is concern that this may re-normalize smoking in England and may not hinder smokers' motivation to quit smoking. according to Dr. Sarah Jackson (UCL, lead author of the study).

"Our results found no evidence that spending time with vapers discourages smokers from quitting."This should help to alleviate concerns about the broader impact of e-cigarettes on public health.

About one-quarter (25,8%) of the smokers participating in the study reported spending time regularly with the vapers. Of these, about one-third (32,3%) had attempted to quit the previous year, a higher rate than smokers who did not regularly spend time with vapers (26,8%).

IT'S THE TIME TO GO FROM TOBACCO TO E-CIGARETTE

A key factor in these differences may be that smokers regularly exposed to the use of the electronic cigarette by others are more likely to use the electronic cigarette themselves. When self-consumption was taken into account, exposure to other people using e-cigarettes had little impact on smokers' motivation to quit and their recent quit attempt according to Dr. Jackson.

The study was conducted over a period of three and a half years, from November 2014 to May 2018. Data were provided by nearly 13 000 participants in the study Smoking Toolkit, a monthly study in course on smoking habits in England.

According to Public Health England, electronic cigarettes would be about 95% less dangerous than burning cigarettes. The authors believe that the results should provide reassurance about the broader impact of e-cigarettes on public health, particularly if it was shown that the alternative, smoking, appeared to reduce the motivation of other smokers to quit.

Kruti Shrotri, specialist in the fight against smoking at Cancer Research UK, said : Until now, there was not much evidence to determine if e-cigarettes could normalize smoking. It is therefore encouraging that mating with vapers is really motivating for smokers to quit. As the number of electronic cigarette users increases, we hope that smokers who come into contact with these users will be encouraged to quit.
