In the state of Rhode Island in the United States, a man decided to sue Amazon, LG Electronics et KMG-Imports in justice. The reason ? The sale of an electronic cigarette and batteries that allegedly caught fire and seriously burned his leg and hands.

In a lawsuit filed last month in Rhode Island Superior Court, the plaintiff Kyle Melone claims that two lithium-ion batteries he bought for his electronic cigarette " exploded spontaneously in his pocket burning his shorts and burning his leg. ". The material designated in this case is an iPV5 200W TC box which was accompanied by 2 LG HG2 18650 3000mAh batteries.

During his hearing the victim declared that he was in his father's car and that following the degassing he tried to remove the batteries from his pocket. According to the complaint, Kyle Melone spent three days in the intensive care unit at the Rhode Island Hospital. His injuries, it is claimed, caused considerable pain and resulted in lost wages and large medical bills.

Following this, Amazon KMG-Imports declined to comment. Regarding LG Electronics, a spokesperson in the United States said: " We cannot speak on behalf of LG Chem who make the batteries, but we have heard of another incident like this with a counterfeit battery "
