FINLAND: A tax to limit the use of e-cigarettes.

In Finland, the price of electronic cigarettes could soon double! The reason ? A tax legislation proposed by the government aimed at reducing the use of e-cigarettes which could bring a few million additional euros per year into state coffers.

The Finnish government is planning a new tobacco tax, the extension of which should include electronic cigarettes. While this is only a draft at the moment, a decision regarding the taxation of e-cigarettes will be taken at the budget process meetings this fall.

If this new taxation is validated, the tax would be 30 cents per milliliter of e-liquid. Currently cheap, the cost of e-liquids may well increase significantly in Finland if this proposal comes into force.

« If this tax proposal to 3 Euros (for 10ml of e-liquid) is approved, the price of the cheapest products on the market will double“, Says Merja Sandell, government advisor with the Ministry of Finance.

AN EXTENDED TAX TO E-LIQUIDS WITHOUT NICOTINETaxes

Until now, only e-liquids without nicotine were authorized for sale in Finland. But by the end of the year, it is very likely that nicotine e-liquids will face their point of sale appearances.
« The idea is that the tax does not come into force at the same time as the legal arrival of new products on the market. Everything is conditioned on the extension of the tobacco tax to all of these productsSays Merja Sandell.

If the main objective of this tax is to limit the use of e-cigarettes, it should still bring in a few million in the coffers of the state.
