Launched a few years ago by the League Against Cancer, the label "Tobacco-free space" has been allocated to 218 outdoor public spaces, parks or beaches (whole or in part), where smoking is banned by municipal decree, in 29 cities to date. As for children's play areas, smoking is prohibited since a national decree of June 2015.
The league, which promotes « friendly and healthy public spaces« for « denormalising« smoking, responsible for 78 000 deaths per year in France, launched the label « City without tobacco« to convince municipalities to systematize these places.
It was Nice which was the first to create a tobacco-free beach in 2012; it now has four.
