FRANCE INTER: Stop the tyranny of weaning!

The French Federation of Addictology published this Tuesday morning the recommendations of experts advocating less radical treatments than total withdrawal to fight against addictions. These new methods would be more effective.

Experts worked for three years on how to deal with addictions. They auditioned for months all the stakeholders. The French Federation of Addictology makes public this Tuesday about fifteen of their recommendations.

ffa2Le investigation report notes that most people with a problem of alcohol dependence, for example, do not seek help from health care structures, or wait years before doing so, out of shame, guilt, but also fear of withdrawal , because abstinence is often considered the only option for a cure. However, the dogma of weaning seems more and more outdated, because relapses are frequent.

In practice, we increasingly favor what is called " controlled consumption". The principle is that without completely stopping consumption, we reduce the damage and dangers associated with this consumption.

« In the morning, the patient gets up to go to work, he has fewer somatic problems, his biological and psychological parameters are improving.. " The teacher Amine Benyiamina, president of the French Federation of Addictology.

It is the same mechanism for the electronic cigarette, which allows smoking, but removing the tar from the real cigarette. Further reasoning, the report advocates the decriminalization of drugs, since by bringing the user out of hiding, we will be able to better control consumption and work on public support and prevention policies.
