FRANCE: Tobacco responsible for one in eight deaths! 75 dead in 000!

A few days before Tobacco Free Day, the health agency Public Health France publishes Tuesday 28 May a report on tobacco and mortality in France. The cigarette would have caused 75.000 dead in France in 2015 and men are particularly affected.

75 000 DEAD IN FRANCE IN 2015 AND MAINLY MEN!

Cancers, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases: tobacco killed 75.000 in France in 2015, which represents more than one in eight deaths, according to the latest official figures, published Tuesday, May 28, before World No Tobacco Day. " As in most industrialized countries, smoking remains the leading cause of preventable death in France“, Underlines the weekly epidemiological bulletin (BEH) from the health agency Public Health France.

The previous report dated from 2016 and related to the year 2013. It was 73.000 deaths, the same proportion compared to the total number of deaths that year (about 13%). "In 2015, 75.320 deaths were estimated to be attributable to smoking out of the 580.000 deaths recorded in mainland France", according to the BEH.

Men are particularly affected, since 19% of men who died in 2015 died from tobacco (55.400), against 7% for women (19.900). However, in the long term, the trend is unfavorable to women. Between 2000 and 2015, the number of deaths attributable to tobacco in men decreased (-11%), while it was multiplied by 2,5 in women (from 8.000 to 19.900).

In addition, Public Health France confirms figures already unveiled at the end of March by the Minister of Health Agnès Buzyn : since 2016, the number of daily smokers has fallen by 1,6 million, including 600.000 in the first half of 2018. Obtained thanks to the Health Barometer, a survey carried out by telephone, these 2018 figures show that the downward trend continues. The public authorities attribute it to the gradual increase in the price of the package (up to 10 euros by 2020), the reimbursement of nicotine substitutes and the Tobacco Free Month operation in November.

Obviously we will not talk about the e-cigarette which has however played its role very largely in the drop in smoking figures.
