FRANCE: OFDT announces a slight drop in tobacco sales.

This October 23, the French Observatory of Drugs and Drug Addiction (OFDT) published its report on tobacco consumption. Positive balance, sales fell between January and September 2017. And nicotine substitutes are more and more popular. But looking closer, a lot of progress remains to be done.

A GOOD NEWS THAT REALLY CACHE A BAD

This year, between January and September, 33,913 million manufactured cigarettes and 6 tonnes of roll-your-own tobacco were sold in France. In other words, respective decreases of 500% and 1,6% compared to the same period in 6,5. The purchase of nicotine substitutes has climbed by 2016%: in total, 32 million devices (patches, gums, oral forms ) have been sold.

The same goes for drug treatments, which recorded sales growth of 18%! And a good indicator of an increase in smoking cessation procedures, the calls received on the “Tobacco info service” platform have increased by 40% compared to the January-September period of last year.

Good news published a few days before the "tobacco-free month" operation which will begin on November 1st. On the other hand, if we look at these results closely, the results are not so encouraging. Thus, from January to June, sales in 2017 were much higher compared to the same data recorded for these 6 months in 2016. The real drop is indeed observed in July, August and September.

These data provide material for the fight to reduce smoking. In this regard, the Minister of Solidarity and Health recently announced a rise in the price of cigarettes in several stages to reach the price of 10 euros for a pack in 2020. A priority while tobacco is at the origin of 73 000 deaths each year in France.
