ICELAND: A historic rejection of the EU Tobacco Directive.

ICELAND: A historic rejection of the EU Tobacco Directive.

In February 2017, Iceland set up a Law proposition to fill a void and regulate the sale and use of electronic cigarettes. However, a few months later, the country, already used to making its own choices and sailing against the tide, made a historic choice by rejecting the implementation of the European directive on tobacco.

ICELAND DOESN'T WANT TO DO LIKE ITS EUROPEAN NEIGHBORS!

A few months ago, Iceland planned to put in place comprehensive vaping product regulations by making it illegal to sell vaping products to people under the age of 18, limiting nicotine levels to 20 mg per milliliter and the capacity of the bottles to 10ml maximum. But the concern of some health officials as well as vaping shops was immediately felt in the country.

After a few months, the Icelandic parliament finally decided to reject the proposed implementation of the European directive on tobacco and to swim against the tide compared to other states of the European Union. But this is not a first for this country which is not used to being dictated what to do. On a completely different subject, in 2015 Iceland let its banks go bankrupt while bringing some bankers to justice even as most EU countries decided to pay the debts.

It should be noted that Iceland is not part of the European Union and therefore had no obligation to transpose the European tobacco directive. If the country submitted its candidacy for the EU in 2009, according to some sources it should officially withdraw it without going through a popular consultation, contrary to the government's promises.
