JMST 2018: Enovap puts artificial intelligence at the service of smoking cessation!

Today, May 31, 2018, is World No Tobacco Day organized each year by the World Health Organization (WHO), around the world. For the occasion, Enovap proposes to highlight artificial intelligence in the service of smoking cessation.

Special day without tobacco 2018
Connected health: reinventing smoking cessation

PARIS - May 30, 2018 - World No Tobacco Day is organized every year by the World Health Organization (WHO) around the world. This day aims to fight against smoking, which kills 6 million people a year in the world. It focuses on the dangers of tobacco as well as the anti-smoking action.

ENOVAP takes part in this world day today, convinced that the intelligent electronic cigarette can help with smoking cessation and that it is part of the solutions of the future. It is indeed a question of proposing a new way of weaning by leaving the possibility to the former smoker to keep the pleasure of smoking thanks to vaping.

The electronic cigarette for smoking cessation

« Nicotine is an addictive substance, but not harmful. It can therefore constitute a means of accompanying the smoker towards a life without tobacco, and thus not deprive him, but wean him little by little, by reducing the quantity of nicotine ingested. It is the principle of the electronic cigarette which allows to associate smoking cessation and pleasure », introduces the Professor Bertrand Dautzenberg, pulmonologist and tobacco specialist at the Pitié-Salpêtriere hospital (Paris).

According to the Weekly Epidemiological Bulletin, the aids used by smokers who attempted to quit in the last quarter of 2016 are at 26,9% the vape, to 18,3% nicotine substitutes and 10,4% health professionals1.

It seems, therefore, that e-cigarettes are increasingly recognized by the general public as a solution allowing smoking cessation.

Indeed, the vape provides enough nicotine to never be missed while avoiding nicotinic peaks and so do not maintain the addiction. From the medical point of view the electronic cigarette has an interest in the fight against smoking addiction.

But beyond efficiency, it is first and foremost a question of proposing a new way to guide people wishing to quit. A little explored path, opposing a moralizing vision of smoking cessation.

It is in this logic that ENOVAP has developed, in collaboration with tobacco specialists and vapers, a new generation device to manage the nicotine concentration at every moment and therefore to vary the throat hit (contraction in the throat that satisfies the smoker)

Artificial intelligence at the service of smoking cessation

In this sense and in order to strengthen the efficiency of its system, ENOVAP wishes to enhance its mobile data monitoring application. In this context, ENOVAP has initiated a partnership with LIMSI to develop a new artificial intelligence and develop a real platform to support smoking cessation. To Alexandre Scheck, CEO of ENOVAP: « Ultimately and thanks to Limsi's skills in machine learning, this artificial intelligence will be able to develop, independently, new weaning methods adapted to each one.

The project is supervised by Mehdi Ammi, Electronics Engineer, PhD in robotics, and authorized to direct research in human-machine interaction (computing) within the LIMSI.

The algorithm produced by the LIMSI will make it possible to predict in real time the most suitable nicotine concentration for the user, depending on the date, time, day of the week (known by the ENOVAP device) as well as possibly other data that the device can obtain in real time.

« At any time, a user's mobile application can decide to run the algorithm, which will take into account their new consumption data and annotations and generate a new formula. », Explain Mehdi Ammi. « In this way, the more the user consumes and therefore creates data, the more the algorithm will be able to generate an efficient formula. » adds Alexander Scheck.

Predictive modeling of nicotine consumption is thus at the heart of the project. It is carried out according to the profile and personality traits of the user, the history of cigarette use and daily physical activity. « It will be based on machine learning and statistical processing tools, but also on data fusion strategies and tools for taking into account measurement uncertainties. »says Mehdi Ammi.

About Enovap

Founded in 2015, Enovap is a French startup that develops a unique and innovative personal vaporizer. Enovap's mission is to help smokers quit smoking by providing them with optimal satisfaction thanks to its patented technology. The device makes it possible to anticipate and manage the dose of nicotine delivered by the device at any time. By responding to the user's needs in this way, Enovap aims to encourage smoking cessation in a sustainable manner.
