JORDAN: FDA attacks tobacconists and shops selling e-cigarettes.

In Jordan, the Food and Drug Administration (JFDA) suspended the activity of 19 tobacco shops and closed 41 establishments that sold tobacco without having the license. Dozens of e-cigarettes and vaping products were also seized.

A SURVEILLANCE CAMPAIGN TO FIGHT AGAINST E-CIGARETTE

La Food and Drug Administration (JFDA) recently launched a surveillance campaign to combat the illicit and unregulated sale of tobacco products including e-cigarettes. On May 19, the Cabinet assigned the JFDA to monitor and control the trade and sale of "electronic" and non-tobacco products.

So far, the campaign has resulted in the seizure of 104 e-cigarette and hookah kits, Jordanian news agency Petra reported. The administration also destroyed 470 vials of e-liquids that failed to meet general quality, safety and production standards and requirements, according to the JFDA statement. At the same time, the JFDA report states that more than 88 e-cigarettes produced by an unknown manufacturer, had been confiscated during this multi-day campaign.

As part of its activities, JFDA carried out 129 field visits to shops and tobacco shops. 93 establishments have made a commitment to no longer sell e-cigarettes or vaping products. The establishments in violation were informed of the fines pending to be determined at the end of the current legal proceedings, indicates the press release.

In early May, the Jordanian government had already announced a 200% tax on e-cigarettes, vape accessories and e-liquids as part of the amendments to the special tax law.
