LUXEMBOURG: A new law puts e-cigarettes and tobacco on an equal footing.

LUXEMBOURG: A new law puts e-cigarettes and tobacco on an equal footing.

In the future in Luxembourg, no distinction will be made between smoking a traditional cigarette, an electronic cigarette or shisha. On May 31, the new smoking ban law will be put to a vote in the House.

THE E-CIGARETTE, THE CLASSIC CIGARETTE AND THE CHICHA ON AN EQUAL FOOT

On May 31, the new smoking ban law will be put to a vote in the House. Tuesday morning, the members of the Committee on Health discussed it one last time. The electronic cigarette and the shisha will now be put on the same footing as the traditional cigarette. This is one of the elements provided for in the new bill. What delights the CSV, according to the deputy Nancy Arendt.

Nancy Arendt: There is no specific study on the more or less harmful nature of e-cigarettes and shisha. This is why we took the route of caution and said that we put everything on the same level as conventional cigarettes. Where the traditional cigarette is prohibited, the electronic cigarette will be too.

This is not the opinion of Marc Baum of the Lénks.

Marc Baum: We believe that there is a difference and that we must respect it and that we rather trivialize the cigarette, when we place the electronic cigarette at the same level as the classic cigarette. That is why we will abstain.

It will also be prohibited to smoke in cars, on playgrounds and wherever there are children under the age of 12. It will be the same in sports arenas in the presence of young people under 16 years. In addition, advertisements on cigarette packages will be more strictly regulated.

The mentalities of adolescents should be better influenced, thinks Josée Lorsché Gréng.

Josée Lorsché: Instead of having the reflex to smoke if you think it's cool, there are other methods that are healthier than smoking. I just think that smoking shouldn't be considered normal anymore. This change in mentality represents a lot of effort.

According to Cecile Hemmen of the LSAP, awareness also plays an important role.

Cécile Hemmen: There, we expect the ministry to communicate once the text has been voted. And the authorities obviously have to do their job. Signs will be installed… I consider that what is proposed here is an extension of the law. This will also be the case with its implementation.
