In force since August 1, 2017 in Luxembourg, the anti-tobacco law limiting smoking and vaping has not finished talking. To get people to quit smoking, the authorities are resorting to shocking images and tougher laws.
LEGAL PROVISIONS IN FORCE SINCE AUGUST 1ER
1/5 of the Luxembourg population smokes, a large part of them young people. The new anti-smoking law, which has been in force since August 1, must change this with its new restrictions. But what do young people remember?
The new provisions came into effect this summer. Since the August 1er, it is forbidden to smoke or vapote :
- on the playgrounds,
- in sports grounds where minors under 16 play a sport,
- in a car where children under 12 are present.
It is also forbidden for any minor to buy cigarettes or electronic cigarettes. According to the Minister of Health, Lydia Mutsch « All this aims to protect young people"
But the application of the new law is sometimes a bit hazy. There are often gray areas. To verify, a RTL Télé team carried out a small hidden camera experiment. A teenage girl under the age of 18 tried to buy a pack of cigarettes at a gas station, a newspaper store and finally a supermarket. Each time, she succeeded without too much effort. Nowhere was his identity card requested. Even though this test was performed on a very small sample, its result is sobering.
It is difficult to say right now what the new law will really bring and if it will protect young people from the dangers of smoking. But the point is that these changes have been fairly well accepted in practice, although they are not yet fully implemented everywhere.
