MALAYSIA: No ban, but tightening of controls on e-cigarettes!

It has been months since e-cigarettes are questioned in Malaysia. After announcements of bans, it seems that the government is now ready to make some concessions! It would no longer be a question of banning vaping but of strengthening controls on vaping products.

STRENGTHENED E-CIGARETTE CONTROLS AND DOTTED BAN?

According to the statements of Dr. Lee Boon Chye, Deputy Minister of Health, the government would a priori no longer intend to ban the sale of e-cigarettes but it wishes to strengthen control to reduce the health risks that may arise from the use of these devices.

The deputy minister added that the government has also taken proactive steps by drafting a bill providing for the control of e-cigarettes and vaping products, which will be tabled next year.

« The decision to ban the sale or use of e-cigarettes and vaping products in the country depends on the results of an ongoing study, which includes consideration of the needs and the current situation." , did he declare.

These statements by Dr. Lee Boon Chye follow comments on the statement of the National Cancer Society of Malaysia (HMCS), urging the government to immediately ban the sale of e-cigarettes, especially to young people.

Pour it part, le Dr. Zubaidi Ahmad, a central committee member of the Organization of Muslim Physicians of Malaysia (Perdim), said the nicotine in the e-cigarette was about two or three times higher than that cigarettes.

«  For example, in a cigarette, there are about two to three milligrams (mg) of nicotine, but in a vaporizer, the content may be four to 12 mg nicotine. Excessive nicotine content affects the health of users.  »He declares.

The Secretary-General of the Malaysian Council for Tobacco Control, Muhammad Sha'ani Abdullah, suggested that the government immediately ban the sale of vaping products containing nicotine.

« Those who inhale nicotine vapor are not only exposed to cancer, but also to other diseases that could be harmful to health due to what is in e-liquids. In addition, there is no evidence of safe use" , he added.
