NEWS: Cochrane review salutes E-cig!

The Cochrane Review produced its first e-cigarette study. She praises an effective method to quit smoking and reduce the risks of smoking. This is the first time the Cochrane Review has looked at the e-cigarette. This magazine, whose reputation is second to none, regularly publishes international meta-analyzes produced by its volunteers. This time, the review screened two randomized trials involving 662 next-generation cigarette consumers, and 11 observational studies. And the results should satisfy the advocates of the cause.

1 smoker on 10 weaned

According to the authors of the report, the e-cigarette would indeed be an effective tool for risk reduction. When combined with nicotine-containing fluid, it would allow almost one in ten smokers (9%) to quit cigarettes in the year, and one-third (36%) to reduce their consumption.

Without nicotinic fluid, the results are slightly less convincing. 4% of smokers stopped smoking cigarettes, and 28% reduced their consumption.

The two randomized trials evaluated the effectiveness of the e-cigarette in smoking cessation, compared to other nicotine substitutes (patches, chewing gum). The vapoteuse, acclaimed by many doctors, seems to be bearing fruit. It would have the same impact as the other methods on stopping smoking. The authors did not note any particular side effects.

However, it is still not unanimous within the scientific community. In centers and practices, it is not customary to recommend smoking cessation. According to the authors of the study, it would be appropriate to restore its coat of arms.

“The criticisms that e-cigarettes contain toxins are irrelevant. Of course, there may be some risk in using them. But we don't compare them to fresh air; its impact is assessed in relation to cigarettes which kill one in two smokers. From this perspective, the risk difference is massive ”, explains Peter Hajek of UK Center for Tobacco and Alcohol Studies, co-author of the study.

Scientists also mention another large-scale study of 5800 Consumers, recently published in the journal Addiction. According to his results, smokers wishing to wean themselves would have 60% chance in addition to doing so using an electronic cigarette, compared to other alternative treatments.

However, the authors do not call for the e-cigarette to replace other methods. They admit that their conclusions need to be supported by other larger studies. But they repeat it: “these are encouraging results”.
