E-cigarettes could be subject to the same rules as tobacco if the governor Jerry Brown signs a bill that was introduced to the California assembly last Thursday.
This bill defines e-cigarettes as tobacco products, prohibits their sale to minors, and requires that people who use them be "subject to the same laws that currently apply to regular cigarettes. This would mean the ban on vaping in closed public spaces such as restaurants, buses or even nurseries.
This bill also requires the presence of child resistant packaging on all vaping products..
The California Senate already approved this legislation last year and will need to ratify any changes made by the Assembly before the bill can reach the governor's desk. But all of this is generally considered a mere formality.
Governor Jerry Brown is expected to sign the bill.
This e-cigarette legislation is one of six anti-smoking bills planned in this legislative session on health. It also includes a proposal to raise the age limit for smoking to 21 years. It is good to note that if both bills are signed, the e-cigarette will also be subject to an age limit raised to 21 years.
Senator Mark Leno (D-San Francisco), who drafted this vaping bill, today announced that this law will be " a major setback "For the tobacco industry" which attacks young people and taxpayers.«
