UNITED KINGDOM: Philip Morris Announces Stops in Newspaper Sales

A New Year's resolution? A joke in bad taste or a real questioning? Still, Philip Morris announced a few days ago through an advertisement slipped into several English newspapers, having the ambition to stop selling cigarettes in the United Kingdom.

« OUR RESOLUTION FOR THE NEW YEAR!«

«Every year, many smokers give up cigarettes. Now it's our turnThe international firm writes in this release. She presents this initiative as a "resolution for new Year”, Without specifically announcing a stop date for the sale of tobacco in the United Kingdom.

If the company recognizes that it will not be easy, it says it is determined to "make this vision a reality". Its ambition seems to be to turn to a new market, that of alternatives to tobacco.

She stresses thus wanting "replacing cigarettes with products, like e-cigarettes or heated tobacco, which are a better option for the millions of men and women in the UK who would not want to quit smoking».

ATTACKING NEW MARKETS WITH THE E-CIGARETTE AND THE IQOS HEATED TOBACCO SYSTEM

Philip Morris, which owns the Malboro, Chesterfield and L&M brands, also claims in its advertising that it has invested 2,5 billion pounds (around 2,8 billion euros) in the research and development of these new products. The firm adds that it wants to keep several promises for the year 2018 such as launching a website and a campaign to give smokers all the information possible to quit smoking, or even insert this information directly into cigarette packages.

The campaign is however criticized by the anti-tobacco who describe it at the BBC as "a publicity stunt". USA Today USA Today also recalls that the World Health Organization (WHO) has refused to join the Foundation for a Smoke-Free World (Foundation for a Smoke-Free World)… funded by Philip Morris.

In a statement, published in September 2017, the WHO declared that "the tobacco industry and its largest companies have misled the public about the risks associated with other tobacco-related products».
