Stephen Williams, a former UN peacekeeper, said the Optim Group terminated his contract for what he called a minor breach. According to the veteran, he was suddenly sacked from his job for using an electronic cigarette while on duty.
After 22 years in the army, including a mobilization in Bosnia for the UN, Stephen Williams, 54, from Newcastle worked for Optim Group, a company that manages the concierge at Eldon Gardens,
Since December 2015, when he was asked to leave for what he describes as a minor error, the veteran has found himself unemployed.
It was during an altercation with a colleague that Stephen, who suffers from PTSD and osteoarthritis, and who recently had heart surgery, went to the
toilet to calm down. Not thinking, he takes out his electronic cigarette and takes a few puffs to help her relax.
A few days later, it's shock! He claims to have received a letter ordering an immediate dismissal for violating company policy by using a vaping device. While Stephen acknowledges that he was told smoking was against the rules, he feels aggrieved for being fired for one and only one violation.

After looking for work for a while, Stephen finally found a job. While he is happy to be working again, Stephen still feels overwhelmed by the way he has been treated. Optim Group, which employed the veteran, said it would not be appropriate to comment on this situation.
